Inspired: Inspiration in unlikely places

There are notable inspirational people in the world to name a few, Mandela, Gandhi, and Mother Theresa but for me recently inspiration came from an unlikely source when I wasn’t expecting.  To be more specific it was a balmy November evening on a Thursday, when I attended a networking event with a difference called Campfire.

Campfire is a once a month networking event that ditto (a London based creative agency) hosts at their studio. The night, which is now two years old and is dedicated to storytelling, is the brain child of Michael Wilson who is the Creative Director of ditto.

The evening is all about inviting interesting people to come and tell their life stories and experiences. It was on one of these evenings that I met and had the pleasure of listening to the life of Hamish Jenkinson, the Creative Director of the Old Vic Tunnels and the Chairman of Free the Children UK, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children across the world as well as being a Trustee to the Kevin Spacey Foundation.

Jenkinson has had an eclectic career, from working for Guy Richie and Madonna to directing an award winning urban music video to becoming executive assistant to Kevin Spacey, the Creative Director of Old Vic Theatre and directing the video for the Opening Ceremony of the Champion’s League Final 2011.

What I found so profoundly interesting and inspirational was not only that this guy is in his early thirties and has done so many note worthy things in his life but that he was the driving force behind all that he has achieved. When I left that evening I turned to my friends and said ‘I need to do more with my life’ and they all agreed.

What stuck with me more than most was when Jenkinson said to ‘be the change in the world’ that you want to be when he was talking about his charity work with Free the Children UK. I couldn’t agree more. If we want to live in a better world it is up to us to make it happen one change at a time.

As I mentioned already, there are so many amazing and inspirational individuals that we all aspire to be but sometimes those we inspire to be come from very unlikely places and when one is not expecting that has the most profound effect on one’s life – and this one was mine.

As Alicia Bastas, the Cultural Ambassador of ditto put it “the evening is not just about creating an experience for the guests but it is as much about creating an experience for the speakers”
