Good Design: Water works for GEA

JohnstonWorks has been designing and art directing Generate magazine for GEA Group since its inception in 2006. Published twice per year, each issue has a unique feature article based on a particular theme and we have seen some very interesting issues in the magazine’s history. It’s a great publication to design and art direct as it keeps our designers busy in and outside of the studio (and we love to get our hands dirty).

The most recent feature article in Issue 13 is all about the world’s water resource and how it impacts upon our day-to-day lives. From cooling equipment and bottle filling lines to separators and decanters for water recovery and treatment, GEA plays an important role in the water industry.

Working on Generate means we do learn a great deal about some of the amazing innovations and technologies that GEA are involved in. How to extract starch, how to cool an Olympic village and how to freeze earth for tunnelling are all fascinating topics that affect our day-to-day lives. Throughout the magazine we try to engage the readers via rich imagery, informative graphics and interesting typography so they discover more about the world we live in and about GEA too.

The impact of our design work leans very much on controlled styling, art direction, photography and quality retouching. We work with an excellent team to achieve the best results before the publication goes to press. See the behind-scenes-movie of the photo shoot for the feature article and cover.

Here’s the fruits of our labour for Issue 13. We will be publishing Issue 14 in March 2012:
